Since recently tapping our first keg of Harrington Wines Mission, we’ve been drinking a lot of it! But what is it? Mission is a type of grape. In fact, it was one of the original grapes cultivated for wine in California. It was first grown at the Missions (get it?), way back in the 1700s, and later spread throughout the state. These re-discovered vines from Sommer’s Vineyard are now 6 foot tall, tree-like plants that look like they should be in a storybook forest. The wine so pale in color many think it’s a rosé. But it’s a light red wine that’s almost translucent--it’s so light, in fact, we’re serving it chilled. On the palate, it’s fresh, easy drinking, with a bit of earthiness and notes of orange peel and grapefruit. It’s made by Wine Down’s friend, Bryan Harrington in the Dogpatch area of San Francisco, you can learn more about his wines at his website: http://www.harringtonwine.com/ A lot of people ask us how we pick the wines on our list. All of our wines are from small California producers, from there we look for a few things:
The wine must taste great. Taste is subjective, but we have different palates and the two of us must agree it’s a well-made, well-balanced wine that we’re excited to drink. It also must be from a producer we want to work with. We’re fortunate to have personal relationships with practically all the winemakers on our list. Some of them keg wines just for us. And we know they put as much love into their wine as we do to Wine Down. The wine must be a good value. That means it is the best wine we can find at a given price point. We try our hardest to maintain a $10/glass average, and that’s no easy feat. From there, we also ensure there’s a good balance on our list with solid representation of different varietals and styles. We change the list frequently, so there’s usually something new. Want to see a certain wine/winemaker on the list? Let us know! |
