Wine Down is a fun bar in SF’s SoMa neighborhood that serves awesome, local, wine, beer, and food.
Wine Down features a short frequently rotating list from small, independent California producers. We pride ourselves on finding the best stuff at a reasonable price, so you can get a good glass of wine for about ten bucks. We knock wine and craft beer off their pedestals and have fun with it, while encouraging people to try new drinks outside their comfort zones.
We choose to partner with people who put as much love into their products as we do to Wine Down and we know most of the winemakers and brewers on our list personally. We prioritize working with wineries and winemakers who treat the land, the environment, and their people with respect, and they make their wines with little or no intervention (some say that's "natural wine," we say it's good wine). We support other small businesses owned by women and other typically marginalized populations whenever possible.
Most importantly, Wine Down is and always will be a place for people to gather and feel welcome, comfortable, and appreciated. As an Asian American woman and a Jewish woman, we want to help create a world that values, protects, and champions women, people of color, LGBTIQ communities, immigrants, and everyone in between. We believe Black Lives Matter.
Keeping those values in mind, each month we share part of our profits with an organization doing work we deeply care about. If you’d like to partner with us for an important cause, please reach out; you can read more about our donation guidelines here. Thank you for being part of Wine Down.
HOW WINE DOWN CAME TO BE
We like to drink. We like to have fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.
We met while working at a sustainability-focused nonprofit organization (just a few blocks from 685 Folsom!). We’d count down the minutes until we could leave the office to grab after-work drinks.
We love drinking wine and beer and believe this is an important part of everyday life, but no matter how many places we tried, we never found the right bar for us. We’d consistently find ourselves sacrificing quality, comfort, or our hard-earned dollars, and so were our co-workers and friends. So as an alternative, we started raising money to buy good drinks and snacks and host a weekly office happy hour known as “Wine Down,” to help all of us relax at the end of a long workday. As “Wine Downs” grew in frequency and size—and friends of friends started to attend—we knew there was an opportunity to bring the spirit of our Wine Downs to life in a real bar, outside of the office.
Eventually, discussions about the need for a casual, friendly place to enjoy good wine, beer, and snacks at a good price led to months of research and finally the concept for Wine Down. We proudly opened the doors to Wine Down, the bar of our dreams, on June 18, 2016. It’s a magical, happy place and we hope you join us soon!
