How Wine Down Came To Be

We like to drink. We like to have fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.

We met while working at a sustainability-focused organization (just a few blocks from Wine Down!).  We’d count down the minutes until we could leave the office to grab after-work drinks.

We love drinking wine and beer, but no matter how many places we tried, we never found the right bar for us. We’d consistently find ourselves sacrificing quality, comfort, or our hard-earned dollars, and so were our co-workers and friends. So as an alternative, we started raising money to buy good drinks and snacks and host a weekly office happy hour known as “Wine Down,” to help all of us relax at the end of a long workday. As “Wine Downs” grew in frequency and size—and friends of friends started to attend—we knew there was an opportunity to bring the spirit of our Wine Downs to life in a real bar, outside of the office.

Eventually, discussions about the need for a casual, friendly place to enjoy good wine, beer, and snacks at a good price led to months of research and finally the concept for Wine Down.

We're proud to have built the bar of our dreams in San Francisco.  It’s a magical, happy place and we hope you join us soon!

Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc
Bodkin Wines (Black co-owner and winemaker), North Coast, CA
*Chris was the first winemaker in the US to make a sparkling Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting Notes: This unique twist on Sauvignon Blanc has a core of racy crispness driven by lively
acidity, accented with lemon-lime aromas and citrus-passion fruit flavors.

About Bodkin Wines: Bodkin Wines was founded by Chris Christensen, an Iowa native, in 2011. His passion for aromatic wines and winemaking led him to create America’s first Sauvignon Blanc with bubbles. In 2013, Andrew Chambers, an Oregon native, joined the brand and they purchased 24 tons and made 1,100 cases of their award-winning Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc.

Cassandra Chen, Founder of CC Made
Classic Caramel Popcorn
CC Made (Asian woman-owned), Berkeley, CA

About CC Made: Cassandra did not initially pursue a career in caramel making. As a UC Davis graduate with a degree in finance and international relations, Cassandra worked for Bank of America on the foreign exchange trading floor. But “as a currency trader, brokers took us to the most amazing restaurants. It opened up a whole new world for me,” Cassandra Chen recalls. “I realized that, even though my family’s expectation was that I would stay in my successful professional career, it just wasn’t for me.”

She started working in pastry kitchens and eventually founded CC Made.

Zinfandel
SANS Wine Co, Poor Ranch, Mendocino, CA, 2018

About Sans Wine Co: Sans Wine Co. was born on a drive through Guerneville in Northern California’s Russian River area in the late summer of 2015. Realizing there was no premium, naturally made canned wines available anywhere, Gina Schober convinced her then boyfriend, Jake Stover, that producing canned wines was not an absolutely insane idea.
